Body Temperature During Surgery and Anesthesia
نویسنده
چکیده
The recognition of fulmin ant hyperthermia and accidental hypothermia during anesthesia and surgery has given a new impetus to clinical thermometry in the operating room. It is sugges ted that in order to recognize and avoid these conditions in the anesthetized patient, a routine of continuous monitoring of body temperature be added to our armamentarium fo r patient care. One of the problems that has to be solved is the standardization and selection of a physiologically meaningful site fo r the monitoring of body temperature. In order to select such a proper site. a brief discussion of functional anatomy and physiology of body temperatu re is here presented . together with a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the traditional sites, placing emphasis on a new sitenamely the tympanic membrane . The relative constancy of body temperature was recognized by O aude Bernard as a part of the regulation of the "milieu interieur" required fo r the health and proper functi oning of the cellular elements of warm-blooded anim als. The healthy man does not exist with internal body temperature much outside the normal range of 36°-38 °C , although during hard work and in febrile diseases he may tolerate fo r short periods of time temperature as high as 40°-41 °C. Denatu ration of vita l cellular proteins occur above 44 °C. Man may tolerate hypothermic states fo r short periods of time during which his body temperature is as low as 27 °-29 °C, but these temperatures are incompatible with life except under the most careful medical supervision and even then not for periods longer than a few days. The center for regulation of body temperature is in the hypothalamus ( fig. I ) . In this area two

Evaluation of the Effect of Amino Acid Administration on Hypothermia during General Anesthesia in Hypospadias Surgery on Children Aged 2 to 6 Years
Background: Hypothermia is an important complication during surgery, especially in children and is highly associated with serious adverse outcomes. One of the preventive methods is the intraoperative administration of amino acids, which can be effective through increasing thermogenesis and stimulating energy consumption. No studies have been conducted in this regard on children; therefore, we e...
متن کاملThe effect of warmed inspired gases on body temperature during arthroscopic shoulder surgery under general anesthesia
BACKGROUND Perioperative hypothermia can develop easily during shoulder arthroscopy, because cold irrigation can directly influence core body temperature. The authors investigated whether active warming and humidification of inspired gases reduces falls in core body temperature and allows redistribution of body heat in patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery under general anesthesia. ...
متن کاملPreoperative interscalene brachial plexus block aids in perioperative temperature management during arthroscopic shoulder surgery
BACKGROUND Hypothermia is common during arthroscopic shoulder surgery under general anesthesia, and anesthetic-impaired thermoregulation is thought to be the major cause of hypothermia. This prospective, randomized, double-blind study was designed to compare perioperative temperature during arthroscopic shoulder surgery with interscalene brachial plexus block (IBPB) followed by general anesthes...
متن کاملEffect of Administration of Lidocaine at Body Temperature on Anesthesia Success in Rodent Model: A Behavior and Electrophysiology Study
Introduction: Success in anesthesia administration relieves the perception of pain during surgery. Lidocaine is the most commonly used local anesthetic agent in clinical medicine. Moreover, anesthetic agents' temperature changes can influence cell membrane permeability. Here, the effectiveness of different temperatures of lidocaine (Lid.) on anesthesia success rate in rats has been investigated...
متن کاملThe effect of electrically heated humidifier on the body temperature and blood loss in spinal surgery under general anesthesia
BACKGROUND General anesthesia often produces some degree of hypothermia and hypothermia causes much more blood loss during surgery than normothermia. Electrically heated humidifiers (EHHs) have been used for patients under general anesthesia and in the intensive care unit. However, the benefits of the EHH have not been widely reported in the literature. METHODS Patients scheduled for posterio...
متن کاملComparison of the effects of anesthesia with isoflurane and total intravenous anesthesia on the intensity of body temperature reduction during anesthesia and incidence of postoperative chills.
This study compared the effects of anesthesia with isoflurane and TIVA (total intravenous anesthesia) on the intensity of body temperature reduction during anesthesia and incidence of chills after lumbar disc surgery. The study was done as a single blinded randomized clinical trial. From 60 patients who underwent lumbar disc surgery, 30 subjects were placed in isoflurane group and 30 in the TIV...
